Several University of South Carolina athletes say they were randomly tested for drug use, despite the findings of a task force that said no random tests have been done since the spring of 1986.

Others said, however, that they were given advance notice of the tests. The task force’s report led to the firing of Athletic Director Bob Marcum and Dr. Paul Akers, who was in charge of university drug testing.

Football Coach Joe Morrison called a team meeting after hearing the news and canceled the first day of spring practice. He also asked players not to talk with reporters about the firing. Players at the meeting said Morrison was upset.

Wide receiver Ryan Bethea, whose arrest for simple possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute cocaine last month led to his suspension from the team, said he was tested at random about three times.
