USIU Women Come Back to Beat USD in Basketball

Amanda Spry scored 21 points and Sonya Carter added 20 as U.S. International University erased a halftime deficit and defeated the University of San Diego, 75-68, in a nonconference game to close both teams’ regular seasons.

USD (13-16), which has an outside shot at an NCAA Division I tournament berth, made 13 of 14 first-half free throws and took a 39-32 lead.

USIU (16-8) shot 65.5% (19 of 29) in the second half. With USD leading, 60-57, with 7:48 to play, USIU went on a 9-0 run over four minutes and never trailed after that.

Spry made all nine of her shots and Carter was 10 of 17 from the floor. Christi English and Jane Gilpin scored 16 and 15 points for USD.

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran swept a doubleheader from host Point Loma Nazarene in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Cal Lutheran won the first game, 14-5, and the second game, 4-2.

Point Loma Nazarene (2-13, 0-2) managed only four hits in the second game. Chris Minakk (1-1) struck out eight for Cal Lutheran (8-6, 2-0).

Catcher John Danis hit a grand slam in the eighth inning for Point Loma Nazarene in the first game, but Cal Lutheran had a 10-0 lead by that point. Dan Weis had four RBIs, including a two-run homer for Cal Lutheran.

Kyle Abbott pitched a two-hitter as UC San Diego, a NCAA Division III school, defeated Division I Temple, 5-0, at UCSD.

Abbott (2-1) struck out nine in winning his second consecutive game. After walking the bases loaded in the first inning, Abbott scattered two hits and did not allow a runner to reach second.

Designated hitter Jim Martinez hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give UCSD (8-3) a 4-0 lead. In that same inning, UCSD’s Brian Murphy stole home for UCSD’s fifth run. Temple is 0-2.

TRACK AND FIELD

Susan Johansson won the 100-meter hurdles (15.18), the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.0) and the triple jump (36-1) as Point Loma Nazarene College (63 points) beat Azusa Pacific (59) and Fresno Pacific (42) at Point Loma Nazarene. Shawnell Reddic of Point Loma Nazarene won the high jump at 5-6.

Five-time defending NAIA champion Azusa Pacific defeated the Point Loma Nazarene men.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Long Beach shut out U.S. International twice, 5-0 and 3-0, in a doubleheader at Long Beach. USIU managed only three hits in each game. Cindy Gosmer was 2 for 3 in the first game.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

No. 1 singles player Melinda Ainsle defeated Cory Stemachowicz of Christ College as Point Loma Nazarene College won its first Golden State Athletic Conference match, 9-0.

ROWING

The University of San Diego men’s team swept four events from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at Mission Bay. The varsity eight finished the 2,000-meter course in 5:18, two seconds ahead of Cal Poly. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo won all four women’s events.

The San Diego State men’s varsity eight finished third at 6:37 in the Parker Cup regatta at Newport Beach. UC Irvine won that race with a time of 6:09.

UC San Diego’s men’s varsity eight team lost to USC in a dual-meet at San Pedro. The women’s team defeated USC’s varsity eight.
