A man attempting to elude police Monday started a car chase in North Hollywood that ended when his car ran out of gas in Bakersfield, authorities said.

When Robert Dean Voyles’ car finally came to a stop about 3 a.m., he was arrested on suspicion of evading police, officials said.

Police said the chase began at 1:30 a.m. when two patrol officers attempted to pull over the car driven by Voyles, 23, at Moorpark Street and Vineland Avenue after seeing it driven recklessly.

Voyles, of North Hollywood, allegedly refused to pull over and led police on a chase over surface streets, onto the northbound San Diego Freeway and finally onto the Golden State Freeway, reaching speeds of up to 85 m.p.h.

Near Gorman, the police cars dropped out and the chase was handed off to California Highway Patrol units. CHP officers followed Voyles onto California 99 until he ran out of gas.
