The State : Clubs Still on Bias List Told

Share

Conway Collis--the State Board of Equalization member who was primarily responsible for enacting a statute barring members of private clubs that discriminate in their membership by excluding women or minorities from taking business deductions for club expenses on their state tax returns beginning this year--released a survey alleging that several clubs fall under the rule. Collis named the Bohemian, Olympic, Pacific Union and University clubs in San Francisco and the Sutter Club in Sacramento as barring women, and he said the California Club in Los Angeles and the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach as yet have no women members, although some are on waiting lists.
