All Kennedy Coach Dick Whitney had to do was take a quick glance at his score book to find the key to Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Venice in a Westside tournament game at Kennedy.

Sure, one player had a double and another had a triple, but it was the arm of Colin Hines that put the game away for Kennedy. Specifically, it was Hines’ strikeout-to-walk ratio.

“Three strikeouts and no walks,” Whitney said. “That’s the game right there. You can usually look right at that and know how everything turned out.”

Hines did not do too badly in the hits-allowed category, either. For the second time in 2 starts, the senior left-hander threw a 3-hitter. Hines (2-0) has yet to allow an earned run this season, striking out 9 and walking 4 in 14 innings.

Center fielder Craig Fleck doubled and left fielder Mike Murray tripled for the Golden Cougars.

Highland Hall 11, Verbum Dei 3--Small Schools Division school Highland Hall (1-0) upset 2-A member Verbum Dei in a nonleague game at CSUN.

Senior right-hander Aaron Rudelson, who was 11-3 last year, pitched a 4-hitter, struck out 9 and allowed no earned runs in a complete-game performance.

Chatsworth 6, Ventura 5--Joel Wolfe drove in Rich Aude with a bases-loaded ground out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Chatsworth a come-from-behind win in the third round of the Westside tournament.

Wolfe, who was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs, drove in 2 runs with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth to give the Chancellors (2-1) their first lead, 4-3.

Robart, who was the winning pitcher, hit a two-run home run to tie the score. Costic immediately followed with the game-winning solo home run.

Oxnard 3, Montclair Prep 0--Montclair Prep allowed runs on an error, a passed ball and a wild pitch at Oxnard.
