Unseeded David Pate upset third-seeded Jimmy Connors, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round of the $415,000 Du Pont tennis tournament at Orlando, Fla.
Connors, ranked fifth in the world, was up a break in the first two sets against Pate, ranked 20th.
In the second set, Connors was serving for a 4-2 lead. At deuce, the chair umpire overruled an out call against Pate to give him a break point, which he won.
In another upset, Dan Cassidy of Atlanta, ranked 119th, defeated seventh-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
In a rematch of Sunday’s Newsweek Champions Cup, Boris Becker again defeated Emilio Sanchez, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
