Local News in Brief : La Canada to Restore Lanterman House
The La Canada Flintridge City Council appointed a committee on Monday to explore methods of restoring, managing and maintaining the historic Lanterman House.
The committee will limit its scope to plans to convert the house into a museum and recital hall, said Mayor J. Bixby Smith. “I think there is very little question in my mind it would be used for anything other than that,” he said.
Last year residents and the City Council battled over a plan to use part of the house for city offices. In the face of opposition from Lanterman House neighbors, the council halted studies of that plan.
Smith said he was “a little bit unhappy” because residents in the Lanterman House neighborhood did not volunteer for the 11-member committee, although they had “screamed the loudest” about the project’s effect on the area.
The council also signed a contract officially accepting a $500,000 grant from the state to be used for the restoration. Actual restoration is not expected to begin until next year, Smith said.
Last year the California Craftsman-style home, built in 1913, was willed to the city by Lloyd Lanterman under the stipulation it be used for civic or community purposes.
The committee will report to the council in 60 days, Smith said.
