College Highlights : Fresno State Trips CSUN to Gain Split

John Salles pitched a five-hitter to lead Fresno State to a 10-3 baseball victory over Cal State Northridge on Wednesday in Fresno as the teams split a two-game series. The Matadors defeated Fresno State, 5-2, Tuesday.

Fresno State (18-6), ranked 19th in the nation among Division I schools, racked Northridge starter Geoff Curtis for 6 hits and 4 runs in the first inning and for 4 more runs in the sixth inning.

Northridge (8-15) was led by Scott Stewart, who was 4 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Biola 6, Cal Lutheran 5--Biola scored 1 run in the seventh, 2 in the eighth and 1 in the ninth to rally for an NAIA District III victory at home. Tom Bonds had 2 RBIs and teammate Dan Weis went 2 for 5 for Cal Lutheran (9-7).

Cal State Fullerton 12, Valley 6--Valley, resting its starters between conference games, was routed by Fullerton (11-3) in a nonconference game.

San Bernardino 17, The Master’s 5--San Bernardino (13-2) shelled four Master’s pitchers for 19 hits, including 6 doubles and 2 home runs, in a nonconference game at San Bernardino.

Master’s dropped to 7-12.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Santa Barbara d. CS Northridge, 15-4, 15-5, 15-10--Dave Rottman and Jose Gandara combined for 37 kills to lead UC Santa Barbara in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match at Santa Barbara.

“They passed the ball great, they sided out great,” CSUN Coach John Price said. “It was always side out, side out, side out. Every time we made a mistake, it seemed they scored.”

Santa Barbara, the No. 5 team in the nation, improved to 19-5, 8-2 in WIVA action. The seventh-ranked Matadors (10-12, 3-7) were led by Jeff Krieger’s 10 kills.

Pierce d. El Camino, 9-15, 7-15, 15-11, 17-15, 15-10--Matt Bellers recorded 34 kills and Rico Gumaraes added 21 to lead the Brahmas in a South Coast Conference match at Pierce.

Mark Grondin had 7 blocks for Pierce, which improved to 7-0 overall, 5-0 in conference play.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale 8, Pierce 1--The Vaqueros dominated Pierce in a Western State Conference match at Pierce.

Kelly MacDonald and Carrie Epstein defeated Anna Jose and Geneva Cuba, 6-2, 6-0, for Pierce’s only victory.

Pierce is 2-3 in conference play.
