Prep Roundup : Castle Park Pitchers Combine for 9-0 No-Hit Victory Over Bonita Vista

Sergio Hicks and Mike Vallarelli combined for a no-hitter as Castle Park High School defeated Bonita Vista, 9-0, in a Warhawk tournament game Saturday at Bonita Vista.

Hicks (1-0) struck out six in five innings for the win, and Vallarelli, despite four walks, maintained the no-hitter over the final two innings.

Castle Park (3-0-1) took a 1-0 lead on Chris Sykes’ solo home run in the third. Castle Park went ahead, 5-0, in the fourth behind Juan Beltran’s two-out two-run double. Hicks helped his own cause with an RBI single in the fifth.

Castle Park scored seven unearned runs, taking advantage of six Bonita Vista errors. Lance Strovers, the starter and loser for Bonita Vista, struck out five and allowed only one earned run in five innings. Bonita Vista is 2-2.

In other Warhawk tournament games:

Sweetwater 23, Hoover 16--Sweetwater sent 14 batters to the plate in a 12-run third inning that turned a 7-2 deficit into a 14-7 advantage. Mike Morales batted twice in the inning, singling in two runs his first time up and doubling in a run the second time. Hoover rallied to close the gap with five runs in the fifth, making the score 16-14, but Sweetwater scored seven in the sixth to put the game away.

Orange Glen 12, Mar Vista 3--Orange Glen brought 12 batters to the plate in an eight-run fourth inning at Mar Vista. Shannon Vinje singled in two runs, Marcos Soto doubled in two runs and Sean Gousha and Eric Weiler each knocked in single runs in the inning that put Orange Glen (4-1-1) ahead, 9-2. Scott Coleman (1-0) struck out seven in five innings for the win.

Point Loma 8, San Dieguito 5--Jeff Gattis hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run first inning for visiting Point Loma (3-0). Gattis (2-0) also pitched a complete game, limiting San Dieguito (0-3) to four hits. Point Loma’s Brett Collan was 4 for 4 with two RBIs.

HILLTOP TOURNAMENT

San Marcos 17, Hilltop 7--Chris Selenak led a 21-hit attack for San Marcos at Hilltop. Selenak had a single, double and a three-run home run in four at-bats, and Gordon Sanchez was 4 for 5 with four runs scored. Hilltop starter Brian Leonhardt (0-2) gave up 11 runs before he was relieved in the fourth. Hilltop is 0-3.

Mission Bay 8, St. Augustine 5--Brandon Farley singled in two runs in the first inning when Mission Bay (3-0) took a 4-0 lead. Farley was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Tony Lennan was 2 for 4 with an RBI. St. Augustine is 1-2.

Helix 5, Poway 2--Senior Rick Navarro (2-0) struck out 15 en route to the complete-game victory at Helix. Navarro limited Poway (0-3) to four hits. Jason Ledford’s two-run homer in the sixth sealed it for Helix (3-0). Helix’s Dam Tiumalu was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
