Putting Pulls Away for a 4 1/2-Length Win in San Marino

Putting moved past favored Fiction on the turn for home and pulled away for a 4 1/2-length victory in the $84,450 San Marino Handicap Saturday on the Santa Anita turf.

Ridden by Gary Stevens and carrying high weight of 118 pounds, the 5-year-old, French-bred Putting won his second straight race by covering 1 1/2 miles in 2:26 1/5.

The victory was worth $50,700 for owner David I. Sofro. Putting, the second wagering choice of the crowd of 35,553, returned $11.40, $5.40 and $3.60.

Fiction, carrying 116 pounds and Bill Shoemaker, finished a neck ahead of Chinoiserie and paid $4.40 and $3. Chinoiserie, ridden by Chris McCarron, paid $3.60 to show.
