Phillies Trade Schu to Orioles for Young
The Philadelphia Phillies traded Rick Schu, considered the heir-apparent to Mike Schmidt at third base, to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday for switch-hitting outfielder Mike Young.
The deal also sent outfielders Jeff Stone and Keith Hughes to Baltimore for a player to be named. But team president Bill Giles said in the Phillies’ eyes it was a one-for-one deal, Schu for Young.
Young is a four-year major leaguer who hit .240 in 110 games, with 16 home runs, 39 runs batted in and 10 stolen bases last year.
Schu would have continued as a utility third baseman, first baseman and pinch-hitter with Philadelphia, where he still had to look forward to two more years as Schmidt’s caddie. Schmidt recently signed a $2.15-million contract.
Schu has been with the Phillies nearly three seasons. Last year, he batted .235 with 7 homers and 23 RBIs in 92 games.
