Former Vista Football Star Aunese Suspended From Colorado Team

Sal Aunese, the University of Colorado’s starting quarterback from Vista High School, was suspended from the team for the rest of the spring semester Tuesday because of criminal charges against him.

“His suspension will run through the current spring semester,” Coach Bill McCartney said. “This will result in the loss of his status as the No. 1 quarterback on the team.”

Aunese was arrested early Sunday in his dormitory room. He is charged with felony burglary and criminal mischief for allegedly shoving another dorm resident in the face, forcing his way into the student’s room and causing nearly $300 damage to the room.

He was released from jail Monday on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond, and was ordered to appear in court April 7.

Aunese, a member of The Times’ San Diego all-county team in 1985, will be a junior next fall. The 5-11, 200-pound athlete led the Buffaloes in rushing with 612 yards and in passing with 522 yards last season.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

The San Diego Section boys’ tennis advisory committee Tuesday night named the county’s high school representatives to the Griggs Cup event of the Ojai Tournament, which is scheduled for April 21-23 in Ojai, Calif.

Players entered in the singles division are Tom Phanco, Bishop’s; Andy Potter, San Pasqual; Chris Numbers, Valhalla; Jeff Miyamoto, Patrick Henry; Mike Bucon, University; David Smith, La Jolla Country Day; Mike Miringoff, San Dieguito, and Mark Ellison, Torrey Pines.

The doubles teams entered are Kerry Safdi-Peter Moroweicki, Clairemont; Chris Swortwood-Craig Zarro, Torrey Pines; Scott Anderson-Gene Carswell, Mt. Carmel; Chad Morse-Adam Pappelbaum, La Jolla; Dan Hrycyszyn-Sean Willette, Serra; Angel Gavaldon-Jeff Priske, St. Augustine, and Mike Askvig-Tom Crawford, Valhalla.

One more doubles slot remains open because the committee couldn’t decide between Granite Hills’ Preston Waters-Christoph Herbst and Poway’s Mike Lerner-Jason Fleck. The teams will play at 7 tonight to determine the final representative.

BASEBALL

Freshman Erik Plantenberg lost his no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning, but San Diego State held on for a 3-1 nonconference victory over Western Oregon State on Smith Field.

Plantenberg’s no-hitter was broken up by left fielder John Welch, who singled just inside third base.

Chris Stout went 4 for 5 with 2 runs batted in and scored twice to lead the University of San Diego to an 11-4 victory over Iowa in a nonconference baseball game at USD.
