College Roundup : SCC’s Late Scoring Stops Chapman, 5-2

Southern California College rallied with three runs in the seventh and two in the ninth to defeat Chapman, 5-2, in a nonconference baseball game at Hart Park.

Carlos Salazar lead off the seventh with a walk off Chapman starter David Cantrell. After Larry Jacinto sacrificed Salazar to second, Steve Halweg came in and gave up a single to John Robertson, a pinch-hit RBI double to Erik Gasner and a sacrifice squeeze bunt by Kevin Kasper for three runs. SCC (10-13) also scored a pair in the ninth on three hits and an error by Panther pitcher Matt Patuano.

SCC starter Josh Johnson struck out seven in 7 innings for the victory and Mark Deushane pitched the last 1 innings to earn the save.

Troy Barnhart was 2 for 4 and Mike Grahovac hit a solo homer for the Panthers (15-12-1).

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 8, Montana State 1--Montana State (5-6) won the No. 1 singles but was swept in the rest of the matches. Colleen Duiznan defeated Gretchen Meikle, 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles to turn things around for host Cal State Fullerton (11-7, 1-5).
