Loyola Spikers Look for Three in a Row Against Gauchos

The Loyola Marymount men’s volleyball team, ranked 16th nationally and with a two-match win streak, will play host to fifth-ranked UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 tonight in a conference match. The Lions, 11-16 overall, won their first Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match on Wednesday, defeating San Diego State in four games. They are 1-9 in the WIVA.

Earlier in the week, Loyola defeated Chapman College in three games.

In the victory over San Diego, sophomore middle blocker Chris Young contributed 17 kills and had a .419 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Mike Longacre had 11 kills and freshman middle blocker Chuck Donlon had 10. Junior outside hitter Curt Moothart set up many of the kills with 31 assists, while sophomore setter Rick McLaughlin had 20.

The UCLA men’s track and field team will open the Pacific-10 Conference Saturday, playing host to UC Berkeley at Drake Stadium. The Bruins, defending Pac-10 champions, will be looking for their 33rd straight dual victory. The meet will open with field events at 1 p.m. The first running event, the 400-meter relay, is scheduled for 2 p.m.

UCLA will play host for the Pacific-10 Conference Gymnastics Invitational today and Saturday in the John Wooden Center. Also competing will be Cal State Fullerton, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Arizona State, San Jose State and Washington. The Bruin men are 19-3 in dual meets and are ranked seventh nationally. In a recent quadrangular at UCLA, Fullerton’s Bill Barham won the all-around title, winning or tying in all six events. Berkeley’s Bob Sundstrom is defending all-around champion. Events will begin at 7:30 tonight and 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Torrance United Waves soccer club have won the girls under-12 state title in competition sponsored by the California Youth Soccer Assn.-South. The Torrance team defeated the Fountain Valley Spirit, 7-6, in 10 overtimes in the State Cup final. Sixteen teams competed. The Waves, coached by Sam Tanaka, were 38-2 for the season and won the El Camino Real Soccer League title without a loss. They advance to the Western Regional Championship to be held in Phoenix in June.

The 16th annual Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce golf tournament will be held May 18 at Los Verdes Country Club in Rancho Palos Verdes. Registration will be limited to 120 players, with a first tee off at 9 a.m. Entry fee, including green fees, cart rental, buffet dinner and awards, is $75.
