Another Bent Putter and One Missing Putt

One day after leading money-winner Jay Haas was disqualified from the Players Championship, Curtis Strange and Davis Love III were also disqualified.

Strange, last year’s leading money-winner, read his first-round score in the newspaper Friday morning, then realized he had signed an incorrect scorecard, so he disqualified himself.

Strange called tournament official Arvin Ginn, and they reviewed Strange’s scorecard. Strange was listed with a 74 but knew he had actually shot a 75. The error was at the 14th hole, where Strange recorded a par 4.

“I three-putted that green and had a 5,” he said. “I’m positive, because I was the only player on the green in regulation and the only one to make bogey.”

Love bent the shaft of his putter when he struck the ground with it as he walked off the seventh green, then continued to play his second round Friday.

PGA rule 4-1 forbids use of a club that is damaged other than in the normal course of play.

Haas was disqualified Thursday after he bent his putter in anger and continued to use it.
