Don Nelson to Coach Warriors
Don Nelson, who quit coaching the Milwaukee Bucks almost a year ago to become general manager of Golden State, announced today he will become the Warriors’ head coach next season.
Nelson will replace Ed Gregory, who was named interim coach after George Karl resigned March 24. Golden State, a semifinalist in the Western Conference playoffs last year, was 17-53 before entering tonight’s game against San Antonio. “I’m a good basketball coach,” said Nelson, who is one of just three men to be named NBA Coach of the Year at least twice. “But I don’t feel I’m the best coach. There are many who are equally as good or better. The people I was recommending and offering the job to, I felt, were better coaches.”
