College Roundup : Irvine Falls Short, Loses to USIU, 6-5

United State International University scored a run in the ninth inning and hung on to defeat UC Irvine, 6-5, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Anteater Field.

Pat Rocco, a pinch-hitter, walked and Larry Oedewalt doubled to score Rocco and break a 5-5 tie for USIU. Craig Brink (6-5) went the distance but took the loss for Irvine (20-19-1), which lost for the fifth consecutive time.

Irvine had a chance in the ninth but the rallied failed. Jeff Oberdank singled to open the bottom of the ninth and John Seeburger was hit by a pitch one out later. But Tracy Shanahan, a pinch-hitter, flied out and Stacy Parker struck out to end the game.

Oberdank had a double earlier in the game, making it the 23rd time this season he has had two or more hits in a game.

Brink gave up four runs in the first but settled down after that. He had retired 13 in a row before walking Rocco to start the ninth inning. USIU is 15-21-1.

Irvine cut the lead to 4-3 with a run in the third innings and two in the fifth. Don Nicholson and Al Rodriguez singled, Oberdank double in one run and Marcus Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to score the other. Robinson had two hits and two RBIs.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 4-6, California Lutheran 2-7--Larry Jacinto threw a four-hitter in the first game for visiting Southern California (14-19-1, 7-5). Joe Holden hit a two-run home run and Kevin Casper followed with a solo home run as SCC opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Jeff Motske hit a ninth-inning grad slam to bring SCC within a run in the second game. Kendall Casper had three hits for SCC.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 9, UC Riverside 0--No. 1 singles player Nicole Brechtbuhl (16-12) defeated Julie Kidwell, 6-0, 6-1, and Jennifer Aafedt defeated Chrissy Simmons, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the Titans (13-11, 1-6) at home. Riverside is 7-14.
