THE COLLEGES : College Roundup : Mayne Pushes Hit Streak to 19 Games; Titans Win

Brent Mayne extended his hitting streak to 19 games as Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal State Long Beach, 9-2, Friday in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game at Long Beach.

Mayne, a sophomore catcher, went 4 for 4 with 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored. He had a two-run triple in the fourth inning.

Mark Beck (8-4) pitched eight innings for the victory. Beck struck out six and allowed 10 hits.

Ralph Ramirez went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs for Fullerton. He broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a three-run homer. Mark Razook had three hits for the Titans (26-10, 5-2).

Carlos Gonzalez went 5 for 5 with an RBI double in the first for Long Beach (11-31, 1-6). John Eldred hit a solo home run for the 49ers.

Dan Bryan (3-4) took the loss, allowing eight runs in five innings.

In another PCAA game:

UC Irvine 9, UC Santa Barbara 8--Stacy Parker had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to score the winning run for Irvine at Anteater Field. Irvine led, 7-1, in the fifth inning but Santa Barbara (17-27, 1-7) started to rally and tied it, 8-8, with an unearned run in the eight.

Marcus Robinson reached on an error to lead off the ninth for Irvine (22-19-1, 2-5). He was sacrificed to second base by Osmar DeChavez. Don Nicholson walked and the runners moved up on a passed ball before Robinson hit the sacrifice fly. Kevin Kandalaft (2-1) worked the final two innings to get the victory. Al Rodriguez had a double and a triple and three RBIs for Irvine.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn.:

UC Riverside 7, Chapman 5--Matt Beltran went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs as Riverside took over first place in the conference with the win at Hart Park. Riverside (10-4, 20-15) scored twice on four singles in the first inning and built a 7-2 lead after five.

Chapman (9-5, 20-15-1) closed it to 7-4 with Chris Cutliff’s two-run homer in the seventh and 7-5 on Cutliff’s RBI single in the ninth. Cutliff was 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs. Right-hander Troy Kent (4-4) went the distance for Riverside, giving up 7 hits, walking 4 and striking out 4.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. tennis:

UC Davis 5, Chapman 4--Ken Lee and Tom Burwell defeated Pete Bohan and Darren Capik, 7-6, 7-6, to give UC Davis, ranked 14th in Division II, an upset victory at No. 1 Chapman. Miles Walker defeated Chris Newman, 6-1, 6-1, and Olivier Amerlinck defeated Burwell, 6-1, 6-4, for Chapman (15-10), which has lost five of its past seven matches.

In the Houston women’s tennis tournament:

UC Irvine 5, Rice 4--Courtney Weichsel and Kathy Rose defeated Alice Dodicka and Lori Cronk, 6-1, 7-5, to give UC Irvine (15-5) the victory at the University of Houston. Irvine plays Utah today in the championship match at 1:30 p.m.
