Fourteen national bests for 1988 were set and four runners won two events Saturday night at the 21st Arcadia Invitational Track Meet at Arcadia High School.

Ian Alsen of Granada Hills and Laurie Gomez of Youngstown, Ohio, a pair of distance runners, were named athletes of the meet. Alsen, coming off a strong cross country season, won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, recording national bests in both. Gomez won both the girls’ races.

Junior Michael Bates of Tucson won the 110-meter high hurdles and the 100-meter dash. Angela Burnham of Rio Mesa of Oxnard, overcoming an injured hamstring, won the girls’ 100 and 200 meters.

The meet included runners from around the country, but was without one of the local stars, Quincy Watts of Woodland Hills Taft. Watts, three-time State sprint champion, sat out after pulling a hamstring in a dual meet Friday. The injury is not serious.
