Tennis Roundup : Navratilova Moves Into the Third Round in Florida
No. 2-ranked Martina Navratilova advanced toward her first meeting against No. 1 Steffi Graf in seven months Wednesday by beating Yugoslavia’s Sabrina Goles, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round of a $300,000 women’s tournament at Amelia Island, Fla.
In other matches, third-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina beat Beverly Bowes, 6-4, 6-4, and Kathleen Horvath upset seventh-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez, 7-6, 6-3. Graf didn’t play Wednesday.
Guillermo Vilas of Argentina rallied to defeat Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, reaching the quarterfinals of a $150,000 tournament at Nice, France.
Top-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union moved into the second round with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Michele Gioroni of Italy.
At Madrid, Alberto Mancini of Argentina upset third-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, in a $93,400 tournament.
