College Roundup : Fullerton Softball Team Sweeps, Is Alone in 2nd
The Cal State Fullerton softball team moved into sole possession of second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. by sweeping a doubleheader from the University of the Pacific, 3-0, 4-1, Friday night at Fullerton.
Fullerton is two games behind Fresno State, which swept two from Long Beach State Friday night. The Titans could gain a piece of the conference lead today, when they host the second-ranked Bulldogs.
On Friday night, the Titans got strong pitching from Anjie Bryant and Chris Gage. Bryant became the Titans’ first 20-game winner of the season as she pitched a three-hit shutout to improve her record to 20-5. Carey Hess, Charis Monroe and Mich DeBree all had RBI singles for Fullerton. Suzi Bradach (16-8), an El Dorado High School graduate, took the loss for Pacific.
In the second game, the Titans had eight hits, including two by DeBree, as seventh-ranked Fullerton improved its record to 41-11, 15-5 in PCAA play. Gage improved her record to 4-2 on the year; while Pacific’s Sue Cardinale fell to 5-5.
In nonconference tennis:
UC Irvine 8, Miami (Fla.) 1--Trevor Kronemann defeated John Donar, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3, and Richard Lubner defeated Grant Shaw, 6-3, 6-1, to lead Irvine (19-5) at Miami.
In nonconference women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 5, UC Santa Barbara 4--The No. 2 doubles team of Kathy Rose and Courtney Weichsel defeated Franki Heron and Mette Frank, 6-0, 6-2, to give host Irvine (17-6) the victory.
