Van der Poel Wins Blegian Cycling Race
Adri Van der Poel of the Netherlands outsprinted Belgian Michel Dernies and Briton Robert Millar to win the Liege-Bastogne-Liege cycling race Sunday.
The trio finished 35 seconds ahead of another Dutchman, Steven Rooks. Ireland’s Sean Kelly won the sprint of the pack for fifth place, 47 seconds behind Van der Poel.
The race was marred by a injury to Laurent Fignon of France, who fell and broke his wrist.
Liege-Bastogne-Liege makes a 161-mile loop through the hilly and wooded Ardennes region in southern Belgium. The event is the oldest classic in cycling, its first edition going back to 1892.
