Haute couture designer Christian Lacroix is the toast of Manhattan this week, where the American Ballet Theatre is wearing about $500,000 worth of his clothing. Lacroix was commissioned to dress the company for its revival of “Gaite Parisienne,” which was performed in Los Angeles last month, but had its New York premiere Wednesday before a $1,000-a-ticket audience. Lacroix lavished his work with yards of stripped and polka dotted materials, gold braid and ruffles in colors that ranged from pastels to bright reds and acid greens. “Lacroix’s costumes are delicious, full of inside jokes,” Mikhail Baryshnikov, ABT artistic director, said after the premiere. “His wild imagination fits this ballet perfectly.”
