Stan Javier singled home Jose Canseco with two out in the 13th inning Thursday night at Chicago, and the Oakland Athletics added two unearned runs for a 6-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

With one out, Canseco and Dave Parker singled off reliever Bill Long (0-1). Mark McGwire walked on four pitches to load the bases, and pinch-hitter Dave Henderson struck out, before Javier lined his game-winning hit to left field.

Shortstop Ozzie Guillen booted Glenn Hubbard’s ground ball for an error, allowing Parker to score. Long’s wild pitch brought home McGwire, but Javier was out trying to score from second.

Gene Nelson (2-2) pitched two shutout innings for the victory, which snapped Oakland’s five-game losing streak against Chicago dating back to last season. The White Sox had won 12 of the last 13 games against Oakland.

Dennis Eckersley pitched the 13th to pick up his American League-leading seventh save in as many appearances.

Boston 12, Detroit 3--Ellis Burks had four hits and four runs batted in, Spike Owen hit a two-run homer, and rookie Steve Ellsworth scattered six hits over seven innings as the Red Sox beat the Tigers at Detroit.

Burks, who drove in three runs with a triple, Owen and Rick Cerone each scored three times in support of Ellsworth (1-2), who walked one and didn’t strike out a batter before giving up a homer to Matt Nokes, his fourth, in the seventh inning.
