Bruce Hurst was one out away from a shutout and had to settle for a complete game.

“I’ll take 30 just like that one,” Hurst said after throwing a 6-hitter with no walks and 8 strikeouts to give the Boston Red Sox their sixth straight victory, 5-1 over the Milwaukee Brewers, in the only major league baseball game played Monday.

“My thought was to get the win, but the shutout would be nice,” said Hurst, who improved his record to 3-0.

Rookie Brady Anderson got his first game-winning run batted in when his sacrifice fly in the third inning broke the scoreless tie.

“It’s just nice to contribute as a rookie,” Anderson said.

A contribution from everyone is just what Boston Manager John McNamara wants.

“We’re getting very good pitching, and we’re executing with runners in scoring position,” McNamara said.

Brewer Manager Tom Trebelhorn watched his team scratch one run off Boston pitching in two games, while dropping its fifth straight to the Red Sox.

“Hurst was overpowering. Maybe the radar gun doesn’t say he’s overpowering, but he located his pitches well,” Trebelhorn said.

The Red Sox chased Milwaukee starter Bill Wegman (1-3) with one out in the seventh when Ellis Burks’ run-scoring single drove in Anderson, who had doubled, and gave them a 3-0 lead.

Boston scored its first run in the third when Rick Cerone led off with a double and went to third on a fly ball. Cerone then scored on Anderson’s sacrifice fly to left.

Marty Barrett’s second single of the game drove in Anderson from second with one out in the fifth. Anderson singled and advanced to second when first baseman Greg Brock misplayed a grounder by Burks.

The Red Sox ended their scoring with two unearned runs in the ninth off former teammate Mark Clear.

The Brewers got their run when Glenn Braggs singled with one out in the ninth and scored Brock’s double.
