The owners of the Chicago White Sox have paid $25,000 to the city of St. Petersburg, Fla., to study whether Al Lang Stadium could be used as a temporary home for the American League team pending completion of the 43,000-seat Suncoast Dome.

Rick Dodge, assistant city manager who has headed St. Petersburg’s efforts to land the White sox, said that 7,500-seat Al Lang Stadium could be expanded to 15,000 or 20,000 seats if the new downtown stadium isn’t ready for the beginning of the 1989 season.

White Sox owners Eddie Einhorn and Jerry Reinsdorf say they want to move out of Comiskey Park, which is the oldest major league stadium, and are reportedly impatient with efforts by Chicago officials to build a new stadium.
