High School Track : Good Day in County for Weights

Madison High School’s Jennifer Viavia has been chasing the distance marks of Orange Glen’s Laura Hughes in the shotput and discus all season, but Wednesday, Viavia finally took over the lead.

Despite an 85-33 loss to Mira Mesa in a City Eastern League track-and-field meet at Mira Mesa, Viavia put the shot a county-leading 43-feet 1-inch and threw the discus 131-1, also a county best.

Fallbrook sophomore Brent Noon extended his boys’ county bests in those two events as well. Noon threw the discus 174-6 and put the shot 62-5 1/2 as Fallbrook beat Orange Glen, 75-61, in a Palomar League meet at Orange Glen.

Hughes, whose team lost to Fallbrook, 68-59, at Orange Glen, threw the discus a school-record 130-5 (breaking her own record by 3 feet) and put the shot 40-5. Hughes had led the county for most of the season in both events.

In another City Eastern League girls’ meet:

Serra 81, Point Loma 42--Kelsey Monagan won the 100 in 12.5 and the 220 in 26.8 for host Serra. Lynn Patrick, the county high jump leader at 5-8, jumped 5-7 for Serra; Carla Tucker ran 1:00.9 in the 440 and Julia Taylor triple jumped 34-7 1/2.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Hoover 67, Our Lady of Peace 48--Junior Sherveal Mimes won three races and was part of the winning mile relay team to lead Hoover at home. Mimes won the 100 meters (12.72), 440 (1:01.73) and the 220 (27.37). The Hoover mile relay team won in 4:34.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

San Pasqual 71, Rancho Buena Vista 56--Kira Jorgensen set a personal best in the 800 meters with a 2:15.1 at Vista High. Jorgensen’s previous best was 2:17.0. Jorgensen also won the mile and two-mile and was a part of Rancho Buena Vista’s winning mile-relay team. Angi Jarrett of Rancho Buena Vista, whose best mark in the 100 meters this year is a county-best 12.2 seconds, ran a 12.7.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Fallbrook 68, Orange Glen 59--Anita Dulay of Orange Glen set a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 33-5 1/2 as Fallbrook edged the Patriots.

BOYS

AVOCADO LEAGUE

San Pasqual 118, Rancho Buena Vista 19--Ken Graves won the 110 high hurdles in 15.5 and the 300 low hurdles in 40.3 as San Pasqual won every event in the rout at Rancho Buena Vista. Steve Pitts threw the discus 148-1, and the San Pasqual 400 relay team ran 43.6.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Mira Mesa 113, Madison 17--Bobby Nelson ran a 10.9 100 yards and the Mira Mesa 440 relay team ran 43.7 at Mira Mesa.

PALOMAR LEAGUE

Mt. Carmel 111, San Dieguito 24--Jerrod Wright threw the shot 50-9, and Sherman Labrador went 42.9 in the triple jump to lead Mt. Carmel at home. Matt Lehman of San Dieguito, the county leader in the pole vault, went 14-6 to tie Mt. Carmel’s Tore Payne.

Fallbrook 75, Orange Glen 61--Glen Reyes of Orange Glen won the 100 meters (11.0) and the 200 meters (22.3) at Orange Glen. Reyes also finished second in the long jump (22-2).
