El Segundo’s John Stevenson became the sixth high school baseball coach in the nation to win 600 games in his career Wednesday night, when the Eagles routed Morningside of Inglewood, 19-2, in a Pioneer League game at El Segundo Recreation Park.

Jose Sanchez hit two home runs and drove in five runs for El Segundo.

Stevenson, who began coaching in 1960, has a career record of 600-232, and his teams have won five Southern Section championships. He is 10 victories away from tying Joseph Michael Kasberger of St. Benedicts High in Newark, N.J., for fifth place on the all-time national list, and El Segundo has 7 games remaining in the regular season.

Murl Bowen of Asher, Okla., is No. 1 in career wins at 1,244.
