Roundup : Whitcomb Leads Valencia by Leaps and Bounds

Eric Whitcomb won three events to lead Valencia High School past Anaheim, 90-45, in an Orange League boys’ track and field meet Thursday at Anaheim.

Whitcomb, a junior, won the pole vault at 13 feet; the 440 yards in 53.8 seconds, and the 220 in 23.8.

Jamie Lugo won the mile (4:37), Mike Daniels won the high hurdles (15.8), and Mike Schoenbaum won the high jump (6-2) to help Valencia (3-2).

In other Orange League action:

Western 68, Brea-Olinda 59--Western swept the long jump, the shotput and the discus to rally for a victory at Western.

Andy Lobpreis won the high jump (6-6), the high hurdles (16.1) and the long jump (19-10). Vince Galaz, undefeated in Orange League competition, won the shotput (51-9) and the discus (146-6 1/2) to help the Pioneers (3-2).

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 75, University 61--Eric Hook won the half mile (2:02.5). Freshman Ron Goods won the 100 (10.3) and finished second in the 220 (23.3) to lead Tustin (2-3) at home.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 97, Troy 28--Danielle Brown leaped 33-10 in the triple jump, breaking her former school record of 33-1, to lead Fullerton at Troy.

Mary Reicks won the 100 (11.9) and the 220 (27.0); Jean York won the high jump (5-1), and Janna Nelson placed second in the shot put (33-1) to help the Indians (5-0), who clinched at least a tied for championship with the victory at Troy.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 70, Western 56--Nancy Chabot won the triple jump (33-3) to lead Brea-Olinda (6-3, 3-2) at Western. Jenifer Yu won the discus (110-11 1/2) and Ginger Ams won the shot put (34-6) to lead Western (1-4).

Valencia 89, Anaheim 37--Heather Killeen won the mile (5:40) and the two-mile (12:01) and Jennifer Schramm won the discus (108-5) to lead Valencia (4-0-1) at Anaheim.

In the Sea View League:

Tustin 93, University 42--Erin Cunningham won the mile (5:25.8) and Judy Jackson won the 100-yard dash (11.4) to lead Tustin (4-1) at home.

Estancia 70, Saddleback 57--Debbie Hargrove won the discus (117-2) and Gina Weber won the shotput (33-6) for host Estancia (4-3, 3-2). Danetta Chaney won the 100 meters (12.4) and 200 meters (26.4) and Melody Mayfield won the 400 (62.0) and had a personal best in the long jump (16-6) to lead the Roadrunners (2-3).

In Angelus League golf:

Mater Dei 193, Servite 211--Medalist Danny Corral shot a one-over-par 36 to lead the Monarchs (10-0), to win the league championship at Western Hills Country Club in Chino.

Freshman Albert Oh shot a 40 (five over par) to lead Servite (8-2), which finished second in league.

In Century League golf:

El Modena 166, Santa Ana 206--Denny Hathaway and Kevin Nyberg of El Modena both shot a one-under-par 30 for co-medalist honors at Ridgeline Country Club in Orange.

In Orange League golf:

Brea-Olinda 229, Savanna 253--John Swain and Craig Botch both shot a five-over-par 42 to lead Brea-Olinda (12-2, 8-2) at the Imperial golf course. Scott Paul shot 42 for Savanna.

In Pacific Coast league golf:

Laguna Beach 233, Trabuco Hills 234--John Gilles and David French shot a four-over-par 40 to lead Laguna Beach (10-1, 13-3) at Cota de Casa golf course. In Pacific Coast League tennis:

Laguna Beach 16, Orange 2--Jason Crabbe and Brien Tyus swept their doubles sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for host Laguna Beach (12-5, 5-1).

In Orange League tennis:

Valencia 13, Anaheim 5--Danny Yu won his three sets without losing a game for host Valencia (14-2, 11-0). Dean Nguyen and Jack Kuei won two of three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 for Anaheim (13-2, 10-2).
