‘89 Breeders’ Cup to Be Held in Florida
The $10-million Breeders’ Cup will be held in Florida for the first time in 1989, state Secretary of Commerce Jeb Bush announced Thursday.
The 7-race event will be held at Hialeah Park or Gulfstream Park, both in the Miami area, on Nov. 4, 1989. A decision on the site will be made later.
A third Florida track, Calder, did not make a presentation to the Breeders’ Cup executive board, Bush said.
“The event will significantly boost Florida’s image, our thoroughbred industry and tourism,” said Bush, noting the Breeders’ Cup could bring in as much as $30 million to the state.
The Breeders’ Cup this year will be at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 5.
Previously, the event was held at Hollywood Park, Aqueduct Racetrack in New York City and Santa Anita.
