College Spring Sports : Nedin, Minor Pitch Canyons to Sweep of Cuesta

Tim Nedin and Kevin Minor pitched complete-game victories and Billy Picketts was 5 for 8 with four runs batted in for College of the Canyons in a Western State Conference doubleheader sweep of Cuesta, 7-2 and 11-2, Saturday in the regular-season finale at Canyons.

Nedin (11-1) gave up seven hits, struck out nine and walked one in the opener, and Minor gave up six hits, struck out five and walked one in the second game.

Picketts was 2 for 4 with two RBIs in the first game and teammate Chris Joy was 2 for 3 with a home run, triple and four RBIs. Joy hit a three-run home run in the third inning and a run-scoring triple in the fifth.

In the second game, Picketts was 3 for 5 with two RBIs and teammates Ray Palagyi, Pete Washington and Randy Cooper each had two hits for Canyons (30-6, 22-3 in conference play).

In other baseball games:

CS Northridge 12-2, CS Los Angeles 2-7--Scott Stewart was 5 for 8 with three RBIs as Northridge split the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader at Cal State L. A.

Stewart was 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in the first game and 2 for 4 with one RBI in the second game.

Stewart, Chae-Ho Chong, Mark Bowen and Jimmy Mitchell all hit home runs for Northridge (18-30, 9-14) in the opener. Stewart and Chong hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning. Scott McIntyre was 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs in the first game for Northridge.

Cal State L. A. is 22-29, 13-13.

Westmont 5-4, Cal Lutheran 3-8--Tim Lewis tripled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of the second game as Cal Lutheran rallied to earn a split in the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

With the score tied, 4-4, Lewis tripled home Tom Bonds, who had walked. Gene McGary singled home Lewis.

The Kingsmen added two runs in the eighth on Anthony Espitia’s run-scoring double and a Henry Campos single. David Leonhardt was hit by a pitch and scored on Espitia’s double before Campos singled home Espitia.

Leonhardt snapped a 1-1 tie with a three-run homer in the third, but Westmont rallied for three in the seventh to tie the score.

Leonhardt and Kevin Wynn hit solo home runs in the first game as the Kingsmen (20-19, 12-7) racked up five hits and committed four errors.

Hancock 17-10, Pierce 9-7--Kevin Johnson had two triples and a double, but Pierce was swept in its second consecutive Western State Conference doubleheader.

Johnson, a freshman infielder, had a two-run triple in the fourth inning of the first game and finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs. He was 4 for 7 on the day.

In the second game, Tim McDonnell doubled twice and went 3 for 3. He had run-scoring doubles in the fourth and sixth.

Pierce (11-21, 5-20) had 24 hits in the season-ending doubleheader but never led.

Moorpark 16-10, Santa Barbara 5-3--Kris Kaelin went 6 for 8 with a home run and triple and delivered a key two-run single to lead a Moorpark rally in the first game of the Western State Conference doubleheader at Moorpark.

With Moorpark leading, 5-4, Moorpark staged a four-run rally in the sixth inning behind Kaelin’s single. Kaelin went 3 for 5 with five RBIs to key a 20-hit Moorpark attack.

Lloyd Wood doubled twice and went 3 for 5 in the first game.

In the second game, Moorpark scored four in the first and six in the second. Kevin Thomas hit a three-run home run and the Raiders collected 13 hits.

Corey Aurand, went 4 for 8 and was 14 for 27 last week.

Moorpark (10-23, 5-19) plays host to Glendale in its season finale Monday.

The Master’s 19, Biola 6--Mark MacArthur belted a three-run home run to cap a four-run Master’s rally in the third inning of the NAIA District III game at Master’s.

David Mayr, who was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, led off the third with a triple and scored on Tony Ellis’ double to snap a 1-1 tie. MacArthur, who was 4 for 4, followed with the home run.

After the third-inning rally, Master’s (22-23, 11-8) scored in every inning except the seventh.

The Mustangs have outscored Biola, 37-13, the past two games, collecting 33 hits and seven home runs.

Harbor 9, Mission 1--Harbor pounded the Mission pitching staff for 13 hits in the Southern California Conference game at Bluebird Stadium in Sun Valley.

Gino Yancosky, Blair Nogosek and Mike Yeaman had Mission’s only hits. The Free Spirits ended the season with an overall record of 7-23-1, 6-15.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 0-4, Cal Baptist 1-1--The Regals split a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran as DeeAndra Pilkington gave up a single that drove in Cal Baptist’s winning run in the top of the eighth inning in the first game.

Pilkington (10-7), however, went 2 for 4 in the first game and Teri Rupe was 2 for 3.

In the second game, Rosa Jimenez tossed a one-hitter and was 2 for 3 with one run batted in and a run scored.

The only hit Jimenez (9-5) gave up was a single in the third inning to Kim Fields, who also scored Cal Baptist’s only run.

The Master’s 6-0-9, Southern California 2-9-0--Master’s won two of three NAIA District III games at Master’s.

Michelle Vail allowed one earned run in pitching two complete-game victories for the Mustangs. Vail, a freshman right-hander, gave up one earned run and walked two in the first win, and hurled a six-hit shutout in the next. Terri Meade doubled and was 3 for 4 while knocking in two runs for Master’s.

In the second game, Master’s Mindee Burrows tripled, but the Vanguards prevailed.

Vail had one of four Master’s doubles in the third game--a makeup for a rainout--as the Mustangs mounted an 11-hit attack. Vail (9-7), who has an 0.93 earned-run average in district play, walked two and struck out two in that game.

The Mustangs (12-15, 7-11) need a split against Cal Lutheran on Monday to advance to the district playoffs.
