Spring Sports Notebook : Moore Leads Occidental to 10th Title in a Row

Occidental College’s Molly Moore finished in the top three in five events Saturday, earning 32 points and leading the Occidental women’s team to its 10th consecutive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference track title.

The senior successfully defended her high jump title with a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches in the conference final at Occidental. She also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.68 seconds) and the 1,600-meter relay (4:06.87) and was third in the long jump (17-2) and the 400 meters (1:00.53).

Occidental also got a win from Louise Coulter, who qualified for the NCAA Division III nationals with a 41.10-meter discus toss. Occidental had 171 points followed by Claremont with 135.

Occidental has won nine of its 10 titles under Coach Bill Harvey.

Harvey is also coach of the Occidental men’s team, which also won a conference title Saturday. Occidental finished with 174 points, followed by Claremont with 161. The men’s team has won seven conference titles in Harvey’s nine years as coach.

The men were led by Chris Beard, who won the hammer throw (187-9) and the shotput (48-9) and was second in the discus (40.47 meters). Lionel Shaw was also a double winner, taking the 800 meters (1:57.4) and the 1,500 meters (4:04.39).

Occidental’s Chris Tregillis came from behind to win the steeplechase in a national-qualifying 9:14.29.

Add track: The Glendale College men’s team won its 14th consecutive Western State Conference title, scoring 167 points at the conference final Saturday. Bakersfield placed second with 161 points.

Glendale’s Jose Hernandez was named the meet’s outstanding athlete with victories in the 5,000 meters (15:47.8) and the 10,000 meters (33:13). Rodney Bradshaw won the 110-meter high hurdles in 13.8 seconds, better than the school record of 14.1, but the race was hand-timed, making it unacceptable for record purposes.

Mark McMillan won the 100 meters in a wind-aided 10.7 seconds and David Bunevacz took the javelin title with a throw of 192- 1/2.

The Glendale women’s team placed sixth in the conference with victories by Karen Myers in the discus (128-) and Linda Benioff in the shotput (39-7), both personal records.

Breeden success: Glendale College’s Shelley Breeden won the singles title and teamed with Jennifer Schmidt to win the doubles crown at the Western State Conference tennis tournament Saturday at Santa Barbara City College.

Breeden, Schmidt and Anna Jose, who was eliminated in the singles quarterfinals, will participate in the Southern California regional playoffs beginning today at Ventura College.

Add tennis: Occidental’s Kiki Roe and Harriet Wilcox teamed to take second in the SCIAC doubles tournament Saturday. Junta and Harris were defeated by Pomona Pitzer’s Kelly Lindberg and Karen Nilsen. Occidental placed third in the SCIAC final.

Final numbers: Jon Billingsley led all batters on the Occidental baseball team (18-19, 9-9 in the SCIAC) with a .420 average, 4 home runs and 32 runs batted in. A right-handed pitcher, he also had a 6-3 record with a 3.53 earned-run average. In 74 innings he struck out 67 batters. Bruce Fuller (.343 batting average) led the SCIAC in stolen bases for the second year in a row, finishing with 35. He had 31 last season.
