The man accused of being the “bolder-than-most” rapist was ordered Friday to stand trial on 50 felony charges after a five-day preliminary hearing.

Alvin Ray Quarles, 26, of San Diego is charged with 50 counts of rape, forcible oral copulation, attempted rape, burglary, robbery and receiving stolen property.

San Diego Municipal Judge Lillian Quon set arraignment for May 23. Quarles remains in County Jail in lieu of $1-million bail.

Sixteen women have identified Quarles as the man who entered their homes and raped them at knifepoint.

San Diego Police dubbed the suspect “bolder than most” for his tendency to sexually attack women even if others, such as roommates or spouses, were present. The incidents occurred in National City, Clairemont, Mission Valley and East San Diego, dating back to Sept. 12, 1987.

Quon dismissed one count of rape and seven other charges of burglary and robbery because either the victim didn’t show up to testify or the district attorney’s office lacked evidence.

Quarles’ former cellmate, Claudius Jefferson, 25, testified that Quarles had asked him to arrange the murders of a number of witnesses who were scheduled to testify against him. Jefferson said he is a member of the Black Guerrilla Family, a prison gang.

Quon ordered Quarles’ attorney, Charles Adair, to omit the names, addresses and phone numbers of the rape victims when discussing reports with Quarles. Adair protested that such a request would limit his assistance to Quarles because he wouldn’t be able to discuss a particular charge about a particular victim.

Quon asked Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Lewis to get a Superior Court order affirming her decision.

Lewis had requested the order because he said Adair’s associate left reports with the victims’ names in Quarles’ cell.

If Quarles is convicted of all counts and sentenced consecutively, he faces a maximum sentence of more than 200 years, Lewis said.
