Stefanie Powers will be seen on CBS May 15 and May 17 in the two-part “Beryl Markham: A Shadow on the Sun,” playing the famed pilot who was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from east to west. Also starring in the four-hour production, which was filmed in Kenya and England, are Claire Bloom, James Fox, Jack Thompson, Timothy West, Trevor Eve and John Rubinstein, among others.

Film fans know that “The Great Escape” ended with the prisoners of war making good on their breakout. But what happened to them after that? They’ll find out in “The Great Escape: The Final Chapter,” a four-hour movie that NBC has ordered for next season. Starring in the film will be Christopher Reeve of “Superman,” Judd Hirsch of “Taxi,” Anthony Denison of “Crime Story,” Charles Haid of “Hill Street Blues” and Michael Nader of “Dynasty.” Also on hand is Donald Pleasence, who was in the original 1963 movie.

Lindsay Wagner, seen last week in an NBC movie, “The Taking of Flight 857,” will turn up on CBS May 24 in another movie, “Nightmare at Bitter Creek.” It’s about a group of women who set out on a wilderness trip and run into a group of fugitives. The cast also includes Joanna Cassidy, Constance McCashin and Tom Skerritt.

CBS is inviting a wealth of performers to celebrate Irving Berlin’s 100th birthday in a two-hour TV special. Among those scheduled to appear on the May 27 program are Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Leonard Bernstein, Isaac Stern, Marilyn Horne, Willie Nelson, Billy Eckstein, Ray Charles and Rosemary Clooney.

CBS will celebrate another anniversary this month with “Happy Birthday, Garfield!,” an hourlong special about America’s favorite fat cat. Due for broadcast May 17, the program will feature artist Jim Davis discussing the evolution of his famed feline cartoon character. The comic strip appears in more than 2,000 newspapers, and Garfield will star next season in a Saturday-morning children’s series for--you guessed it--CBS.

Stepfanie Kramer, who plays Sgt. Dee Dee McCall on NBC’s “Hunter,” will have a prominent role in “Favorite Son,” a six-hour miniseries that will be on NBC next season. She joins another NBC star, Harry Hamlin of “L.A. Law,” in the production. Kramer will play a TV producer; Hamlin is a U.S. senator. James Whitmore portrays the President. Also in the cast are Robert Loggia, Lance Guest, John Mahoney and Linda Kozlowski.

Hosts: Alan Thicke and Tracy Scoggins will host the 1988 Miss Universe Pageant, scheduled for broadcast on CBS May 23. . . . Angela Lansbury of “Murder, She Wrote” will return as host of this year’s Tony Awards telecast, which CBS will air June 5. . . . Phil Donahue, who has won eight Emmy Awards, will host the 15th annual Daytime Emmy Awards on June 29. They too are scheduled for broadcast on CBS.
