Banning 10, Carson 8--The Pilots kept their Marine League title hopes alive with the victory at Carson.

Banning improved to 11-2 in league and remained one game ahead of San Pedro in the league standings. Banning (15-7 overall) plays San Pedro (10-3 in league) Monday.

Banning starter Ricardo Bernal (7-2) gave up four first-inning runs but settled down thereafter to pick up the win.

Tim Vasquez (6-2) worked the first four innings for Carson and suffered the loss.

“He (Bernal) hung in there and did a good job for us,” said Banning Coach Syl Saavedra. “He didn’t let that inning bother him and really came back for us.”

Banning erased the 4-0 deficit in the second by sending 12 men to the plate and scoring 8 runs. Darren Kondash (double) and John Otte (triple) drove home two runs each in the inning.

The Pilots scored two unearned runs in the fifth but Carson cut into the lead with three runs in its half of the inning.

Ed Lovato tripled home Keoni Kaono with two outs in the Carson fifth and scored on Pat Camacho’s single. George Malauulu drove home Camacho with another triple but was cut down at the plate trying to score.

Carson scored its final run in the seventh when Jason Foster scored on Vasquez’ sacrifice fly.
