The Soviet Union won 6 of 10 gold medals in the 1988 European championships of Greco-Roman wrestling at Kolbotn, Norway.

However, Lars Roenningen, 22, defeated Soviet favorite Sergei Suvorov in the 106-pound class to capture Norway’s first European wrestling championships title since 1929. His brother, Jon Roenningen, finished runner-up in the 115-pound class, losing to Aleksander Ignatenko of the Soviet Union.
