Jarrett Takes Advantage of Caution Flag to Win NASCAR Event
Dale Jarrett went to the front of the pack in a mad dash to a restart after a caution flag and drove to victory Saturday in the Winn-Dixie 300 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Jarrett led for only five laps, the fewest ever for a winner of this race. Bobby Allison led for 13 laps before winning the Winn-Dixie 300 in 1984.
The field was restarting in lap 198 when Jarrett went to the outside, bumping Bobby Allison toward the infield in the rush, beating then-leader Dale Earnhardt to the start-finish line and racing to the front.
A three-car accident at the entrance to pit road followed in turn four and brought the caution flag out on the next lap, but by the time the drivers slowed for the flag, Jarrett was ahead and could not be passed while the flag was out.
Davey Allison, who is on the pole for today’s Coca-Cola 600, did not finish after his car was involved in an accident.
