Philippe Alliot of France walked away with only minor injuries after a spectacular crash during qualifying trials Saturday for the Mexican Grand Prix.

Britain’s Justin Bailey also escaped without injury from a crash that occurred just moments after qualifying resumed.

Alliot’s car hit a safety wall across from the pit lane, turned several somersaults and broke into at least two pieces, which dragged for about 50 yards and stopped a few feet beyond the starting line.

The French racer, however, walked away from the smoldering wreckage.

Three minutes after the trials resumed, Bailey’s Tyrrell-Ford skidded off the track in the second curve and crashed against a safety wall on the right side of the track.

The McLaren team of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost won the two front-row positions in qualifying. Senna’s average speed was 127.377 m.p.h.
