Christian Wins Speedway Scratch Main
Alan Christian of Huntington Beach won the four-lap scratch main event Friday in front of 3,119 in the weekly speedway program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
Christian was a wire-to-wire winner. Bill Hamil of Monrovia was second, Scott Brown of Chino third and Dubb Ferrell of Whittier fourth.
Bobby Schwartz, who won 7 of the first 9 main events, failed to reach the final for the second consecutive week. He was disqualified for starting too soon in his qualifying heat.
Greg Hancock of Huntington Beach, who celebrated his 18th birthday Friday, won the eight-lap handicap main event. Hancock is a senior at Edison High School. Steve Lucero of Riverside was second and Brown third.
Randell Dance of Apple Valley won the second division final, and Jim Blan of Riverside was the third division champion.
