A man and his dog died in a fire that engulfed a Poway home Saturday night. James Edward Daley, 57, was apparently asleep in the bedroom of his one-story house at 13316 Tarascan Drive when a fire started in the kitchen, said a Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Fire units from Poway and San Diego arrived at the house at 7:14 p.m. to find it fully enveloped in flames. After extinguishing the fire, they found the burned remains of Daley and a small dog in the bedroom, said a sheriff’s spokesman. Deputy Coroner Charles Kelley determined that Daley was probably overcome by smoke and carbon monoxide in the fire.

Sheriff’s officials said the fire destroyed most of the house, and estimated the loss to the structure and contents at $200,000.
