Fullerton Meets Familiar Foe, Stanford
OMAHA — Cal State Fullerton, which has a six-game winning streak, plays defending national champion Stanford today in the College World Series.
The Titans (42-16) beat Miami, 9-3, Saturday, winning their opener for only the second time in five Series appearances.
Stanford (42-22), which has won five straight games, beat Fresno State, 10-3, in its first game Saturday.
Although Fullerton and Stanford have met 20 times, the teams have never faced each other in a postseason game. Mark Beck (9-6), who earned one of his victories against Stanford in February, is expected to be the starting pitcher for Fullerton.
The expected starter for Stanford is Mike Mussina (9-3), who earned a complete-game victory over Fullerton in February, Stanford’s only victory in a three-game series with Fullerton in Palo Alto.
Fullerton won the first game of that series, 5-1, but lost the second to Mussina, 9-4. The Titans won the third, 6-5, behind Beck, whose 141 strikeouts this season are a school record.
