An overturned cannon in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 on Camp Pendleton slowed traffic for nearly two hours Thursday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Jason L. Rogers, 23, who was driving a three-axle truck towing the M198, 155-millimeter howitzer, was distracted and lost control of his vehicle, said CHP spokesman Jaime Erebia.
Erebia said the truck drifted onto the shoulder of the highway about 10 a.m. Rogers, in an attempt to get back on the highway, apparently overcorrected and veered into the center lanes, where the cannon overturned.
No one was injured in the accident, Erebia said.
The accident, which occurred 1 mile north of Las Pulgas, slowed traffic for more than two hours, Erebia said.
Lt. Gene Browne, a Camp Pendleton spokesman, said the Marine Corps base dispatched a hoist to remove the cannon. He said the cannon was en route to Camp Pendleton from a Pico Rivera Marine reserve base.
