An early morning fire in a 13-story Glendale building Thursday forced the evacuation of about 50 people and left one employee overcome by smoke.

The fire, in a small fourth-floor work cubicle inside the Security Pacific Bank building at 611 N. Brand Blvd., was reported at 6:31 a.m. Fire Battalion Chief Chris Gray said the fire appeared to have been caused by an electric air purifier that was left on all night.

Eight fire companies and about 40 firefighters responded. Within 15 minutes, the fire was contained, Gray said. Damage was estimated at $3,000.

A Security Pacific building engineer, Mark Medrano, 35, suffered smoke inhalation, Gray said. Medrano was treated at the scene, then taken to Glendale Adventist Hospital and later released.

The building reopened at 8:30 a.m., a bank employee said.
