A girl was shot in the leg as she left class Thursday at University High School in West Los Angeles in what police said was a gang-related shooting.

Christine Herrera, 15, was walking on a sidewalk at the edge of the campus with an unidentified male student about 3:20 p.m. when “someone started shooting,” said Ria Parody, a Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman.

Police said that there were four suspects in the shooting and that one of them, whose name was not released, was captured when an officer stopped his van a few blocks from the school shortly after the shooting. No gun was recovered.

The case was turned over to the police CRASH unit, which investigates gang-related crimes.

“The shooters were gang members,” Lt. Gabe Ornelas said. “We suspect there was a rival gang member in the midst of the students walking with the girl, but who was (the assailants’) mark, we don’t know.”

Herrera was in good condition at UCLA Medical Center.
