A Reseda man died Friday after he was stabbed repeatedly with a steak knife during an argument over religion, Los Angeles police said.

Daniel J. Haubauer, 31, was stabbed about 1:20 a.m. during a fight that occurred in a garage apartment behind his mother’s home in the 7000 block of Whitaker Avenue, police said.

Haubauer died shortly after he was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center. Police said they arrested Richard M. Russell, 29, of Sepulveda, a friend of Haubauer’s, on suspicion of murder at the apartment where the stabbing took place. He was being held without bail at Van Nuys Jail.

Lt. Al Durrer said the two men had known each other for about a year. Durrer said they had an argument about religion that escalated into a physical altercation. The fight ended when Russell grabbed a steak knife and repeatedly stabbed Haubauer in the chest, Durrer said.

The victim’s mother, who was not identified, overheard part of the argument from her home, Durrer said.
