Golf Roundup : 3 Birdies Help Green Take One-Stroke Lead

Ken Green birdied three holes in a row en route to a four-under-par 67 that lifted him into a one-shot lead Saturday after three rounds of the $700,000 Westchester golf tournament at Harrison, N.Y.

Green, a playoff loser at Greensboro, N.C., earlier this season, pulled away from a six-man scramble with his birdie spree, beginning at the seventh hole on the Westchester Country Club course.

He led the rest of the way and came in with a 206 total.

Dick Mast and Australian Steve Elkington shared second place at 207. Mast shot a 68, and Elkington had six birdies en route to a 69.

South African David Frost, not yet a winner but seven times a runner-up in this country, was next at 208 after a 69.

Seve Ballesteros of Spain, a former winner of this event and a playoff loser here a year ago, chipped in from about 25 feet for an eagle-3 on the 18th hole. It finished off a 69 that left him three strokes back.

Australian Greg Norman moved up with a 69 and was at 212.

Loren Roberts, who led through the first two rounds, slipped to a 73 and dropped back to 210.

Lauri Peterson had six straight birdies on the seventh through the 12th holes while shooting a seven-under-par 65 to move into a three-way tie at 212 with Nancy Lopez and Caroline Gowan for the third-round lead in the $300,000 Rochester International tournament at Rochester, N.Y..

Gowan, who led by herself for the first two rounds, survived two bogeys on the first five holes and shot a 73 to retain a share of the lead.

Lopez, the LPGA Tour’s leading money-winner, had a consistent round of 71, with one bogey and two birdies.

Patty Sheehan, who had a 69, was in fourth place at 213.

Miller Barber shot a four-under-par 68, despite 25-m.p.h. winds, and came from four shots back to take a one-stroke lead over Gary Player and Al Geiberger in the third round of the Senior Tournament Players Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Barber, winner of the inaugural Senior TPC in 1983, birdied the third hole to begin a steady climb up the leaderboard and will take a 54-hole total of 209 into today’s final round.

Player, the defending champion, and Geiberger were at 210 after rounds of 67 and 68, respectively, on the Valley Course at Sawgrass Country Club.

Susan Shapcott, at 18 the youngest player on the team, led defending champion Britain and Ireland to an 11-7 victory over the United States in the Curtis Cup women’s amateur matches at Sandwich, England.

The win enabled the home team to retain the cup it won two years ago at Prairie Dunes, Kan. For the Americans, it marked the first time they had lost two straight tournaments in the 56 years of the event.

Judy Bell, the U.S. captain, said the cold, windy weather at Royal St. Georges was tailor-made for the British and Irish golfers.
