A North Hollywood girl was killed and her male companion was critically injured early Saturday when a motorcycle they were riding skidded and crashed into a tree, police said.

Alicia Sampson, 16, was riding on the back of the motorcycle with Collin Colberg, 18, at 2:50 a.m. when Colberg lost control of the motorcycle on Sepulveda Boulevard near Royal Oak Road, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer J. Timmons. The motorcycle struck a tree, and both riders were thrown from the vehicle, he said.

Sampson was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. Colberg was taken to UCLA Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition with several fractures and bruises, hospital officials said.
