From Sea to Shining Sea

Some 38 million Americans--nearly 16% of the population--are expected to travel the roads and skyways of the nation this holiday weekend. Some will seek escape from workaday schedules. Others will return to hometowns to share family picnics and homecoming festivals. On the curbs of city boulevards and along narrow Main Streets of rural America, we will applaud the marching parades that link us coast to coast.

At night, we’ll look skyward as hundreds of thousands of fireworks ignite our skies in celebration of another Fourth of July.

It’s estimated that by 2000, travel and tourism will be the largest industry and employer in the nation. More Americans are traveling in and outside America than ever; more tourists from other countries are coming here.

Perhaps nothing communicates more effectively between nations and cultures than travel. Exchanging visits, comparing customs, traditions and goals can broaden our understanding and enrich all our lives.
