Two teen-agers were in fair condition Sunday after being attacked without warning by a man while sitting on a curb on a Granada Hills residential street, authorities said Sunday.

Kelly McClure, 18, of Granada Hills and Jack Utley, 17, of Huntington Beach underwent surgery for head injuries Saturday at Granada Hills Community Hospital, a day after being struck on the head with a blunt object, possibly a baseball bat or hammer, police said.

McClure and Utley were sitting at Index Street and Montgomery Avenue when they were attacked from behind about 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sgt. Chuck Helm said.

They said they saw a man across the street just before being struck, Helm said. He crossed the street and walked around behind the two and struck them, he said. The man was described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with brown hair and a mustache.

“It was just a weird, unprovoked, quite violent crime,” Helm said.
