Costa Rica’s Poll Wins Two More

Silvia Poll of Costa Rica won the 200-meter freestyle and the 50-meter freestyle events at the USC Swim Stadium Saturday, the third day of the Los Angeles Invitational, becoming the meet’s first triple winner.

Friday night, Poll won the 100-meter freestyle and finished second in the 200-meter backstroke.

Poll’s 2:00.47 in the 200-meter freestyle was a meet record. She won the 50-meter freestyle in 26.42 seconds, with one of Canada’s Olympians, Kristen Topham, right behind her in 26.60.

Allison Higson of the Canadian Olympic team and the Etobicoke Swim Club, the world record-holder in the 200-meter breaststroke, won that event in 2:31.11, setting another meet record. But she was well off her world-record time of 2:27.27.

Chris Wessman of the Wahoo club (of New Jersey) won the men’s 200-meter breaststroke in 2:21.99, and Dan Jorgensen of the Rancho Bernardo Swim Team took the men’s 200-meter freestyle in 1:52.27.

Tom Jager of the Bruin Swim Club won his specialty, the 50-meter freestyle, in 23.09. He had set a meet record in his preliminary heat with a 22.98.
